🌍 Germany · Heller Bock · One of 19 Heller Bocks in hopIQ

A pale bock brewed in the Pilsner manner for Lent, on sale from mid-February and named after St Joseph's Day on 19 March. Bottom-fermented and filtered, at 16.5 °P it is brilliantly clear and golden with a fine white head. Pilsner malt is the only grain, giving flavours of cereal and a little honey; Saphir aroma hops, with Perle and Hersbrucker, add a floral, herbal note and a light bitterness. Full-bodied and very smooth, with a pleasantly warming finish.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with clean cereal notes from the all-Pilsner grist, followed by subtle honey undertones that suggest malt sweetness without cloying character. Saphir, Perle, and Hersbrucker hops contribute a restrained floral and herbal bouquet—delicate rather than assertive, with no aggressive green or grassy qualities.

◐ Taste

The palate enters soft and malty, with the Pilsner malt foundation delivering a grainy, slightly sweet center that never becomes heavy. Mid-palate reveals gentle herbal and floral complexity from the hop blend, while moderate bitterness (34 IBU) arrives late and resolves cleanly without harshness. The body is full yet remarkably smooth, with excellent balance between sweetness and restrain.
