Big Fat 5

Tap to rate

A West Coast double IPA, dry-hopped to the bone with five hop varieties, among them Simcoe, Chinook, Citra and Amarillo, one for each year the Amsterdam bar BeerTemple had been open. Robbert Uyleman of Uiltje first brewed it in 2014 for the bar's fifth anniversary; it became BeerTemple's house beer and is now brewed at Poesiat & Kater.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with assertive pine and citrus notes from Simcoe and Citra, layered with herbal-resinous undertones from Chinook and a subtle floral warmth from Amarillo. Behind the hop intensity sits a clean, restrained malt backbone that stays out of the way, allowing the five-variety dry-hop character to command the profile.

◐ Taste

The palate lands immediately with bold hop bitterness and a drying, resinous bite that unfolds across the mid-palate. Citrus and stone fruit flavors emerge from the hop blend, while the 8% ABV provides enough body to balance the 80 IBUs without cloying. The finish drives forward with lingering bitterness and a grip that doesn't soften.

◑ Finish

Long and assertively dry, with resin and pine persisting on the palate long after the swallow. The aftertaste emphasizes herbal bitterness and a whisper of citrus pith, leaving no sweetness behind.
