Genesis

Tap to rate

Genesis was where it all began: first brewed to celebrate Ophiussa's first anniversary, it now returns for a second time. Citra, Nelson Sauvin and Waimea meet a touch of lactose in an 8% New England-style double IPA that is hoppy and sweet, with only a mild bitterness. Ultra pale malt, wheat and flaked oats, Verdant IPA yeast. Not vegan, as it contains lactose.

AI-generated sensory profile for Genesis

◎ Appearance

Genesis presents a pale, luminous golden hue with a distinctly hazy character, evidence of suspended yeast and protein typical of the New England style. A dense, cream-colored head forms on the pour and maintains moderate retention, with soft lacing left on the glass. The carbonation is visible yet restrained, contributing to a full-bodied visual impression.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with bright citrus and stone fruit notes from Citra and Nelson Sauvin, layered with the earthier, herbal complexity of Waimea. A subtle sweetness emerges beneath, derived from the wheat, oats, and touch of lactose, while Verdant yeast contributes a gentle fruity undertone. The overall impression is aromatic and inviting without aggressive hop volatility.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with balanced hop-forward character, delivering citrus and passionfruit flavors without harsh astringency. Lactose and soft malt backbone create a smooth, full mouthfeel that sustains the sweetness through the mid-palate, while Waimea's subtle pepper notes add complexity. The 50 IBU bitterness remains mild and integrated, never dominating, allowing the fruity hop expression and creamy texture to remain the focal points.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and moderately short, with lingering traces of citrus and a touch of sweetness that fades gradually. No harsh bitterness or lingering hop burn—the lactose and oat base leave a gentle, refreshing aftertaste.

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar Hazy IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same hazy, hoppy, sweet character as Genesis will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
