MECHA

Tap to rate

An American imperial IPA with a powerful flavor and a dry-hop aroma from half a pound of hops per barrel. Bravo, Columbus, Centennial and Citra provide the hops. It was formerly called Mechahopzilla, a name that referred to the brewmaster and was dropped for legal reasons. The brewery behind it sits in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans.

◌ Aroma

The nose is dominated by the signature dry-hop blend, with prominent resinous pine and fresh citrus peel notes arising from the Bravo, Columbus, Centennial, and Citra varieties. A secondary wave of herbal earthiness and a subtle stone-fruit character emerge as the beer opens, underpinned by a clean malt base with light caramel undertones. The aroma is assertive but balanced, with no harsh or solvent-like qualities.

◐ Taste

The palate is full-bodied and grippy, with bold hop bitterness arriving immediately on the entry and extending throughout the mid-palate. Citrus and pine flavors layer over a clean, slightly sweet malt foundation that prevents harshness while maintaining a drying, resinous character. The finish builds toward a pronounced bitter bite, with lingering herbal and piney notes that intensify rather than fade.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and dry, with the hop bitterness persisting as the dominant note. A faint citrus zest and pine needle character echo in the aftertaste, leaving the palate clean but substantially marked by the beer's aggressive hop profile.
