Petrus

Tap to rate

Notes of caramel and roasted malt, with roasty tones in the background. Petrus is Glaabsbräu's dark Bock at 17 degrees Plato, made from Pilsner malt, Caraaroma, Cara Red and roasted malt, hopped with Magnum and Mandarina Bavaria. The name goes to one of Seligenstadt's two patron saints; the pale Bock, Marcellinus, carries the other's.

AI-generated sensory profile for Petrus

◎ Appearance

Deep copper-brown color with excellent clarity and a dense, persistent head. The foam shows fine Schaumhaftung, clinging to the glass in distinct rings as you drink. Moderate carbonation creates a gentle effervescence beneath the surface.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with pronounced caramel sweetness underscored by roasted malt character. Subtle toasted bread notes emerge alongside hints of dark fruit esters, while Magnum and Mandarina Bavaria hops contribute a gentle herbal and citrus backdrop without dominating the malt-driven profile.

◐ Taste

A full-bodied entry delivers rich caramel and roasted malt flavors that coat the palate with smooth, sweet maltiness. The mid-palate showcases balanced toasted character with developing dark fruit notes, while the moderate IBU of 25 provides restrained bitterness that complements rather than challenges the malt foundation. The higher alcohol presence (17°P) becomes apparent in the warmth and slight boozy character.

About Bock

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a Bock?

Bocks are strong German lagers with 6.5–7.5% ABV. Rich malt sweetness — toast, chocolate, caramel — with low bitterness and a warming finish.

Finding a similar Bock

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same caramel, roasted, full-bodied character as Petrus will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
