Dunkles

Tap to rate

Caramel, chocolate and coffee aromas, at 5.2% ABV. Glaabsbräu builds its Dunkles from four malts and three aroma hops and brews it with hard water, in the 40-hectolitre brewhouse that opened in Seligenstadt, Hesse, in 2015. The brewery itself has been going since 1744. No additives, no colouring beer: the house rule is that what a beer doesn't need stays out.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Dunkles

◎ Appearance

Deep brown with a garnet edge, opaque and richly colored at SRM 20. The head forms dense and tan, settling into a fine collar with good lacing that clings to the glass through the drink. Carbonation appears measured, appropriate to the style.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with roasted malt and cocoa, grounded by a gentle coffee undertone. Caramel sweetness rounds out the foundation without dominating. Noble hops contribute a subtle herbal and slightly spicy frame that doesn't intrude on the malt-driven character.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with chocolate and malt sweetness, building through a clean, bready mid-section that feels neither heavy nor thin at 5.2% ABV. Coffee notes persist without harshness, while the 22 IBU bitterness sits quietly in the background, allowing roasted grain to remain in focus. The finish dries slightly, with smooth tannin structure.

◑ Finish
