Marcellinus

Germany·Heller Bock
Tap to rate

Malty, with plenty of caramel and a fine hop note. Marcellinus is Glaabsbräu's pale Bock at 16 degrees Plato, brewed from Pilsner malt, acid malt and Cara Hell and hopped with Magnum and Callista. The name goes to one of Seligenstadt's two patron saints; the other lends his name to the dark Bock, Petrus. Brewed in the town, named for the town.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and malty, with pronounced caramel richness that develops across the palate. The 35 IBU bitterness arrives mid-palate as a gentle, supporting counterpoint rather than an assertive force, allowing the malt character to remain central. The finish transitions smoothly from sweetness to a refined hop dryness, with no harsh edges.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium-length and clean, fading gracefully from residual caramel sweetness into a subtle herbaceous dryness. Warmth from the alcohol builds gently without becoming harsh or boozy on the palate.

What is a Heller Bock?

Bocks are strong German lagers with 6.5–7.5% ABV. Rich malt sweetness — toast, chocolate, caramel — with low bitterness and a warming finish.

Finding a similar Heller Bock

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same malty, caramel, full-bodied character as Marcellinus will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
