Gablitzer Winterbock

Tap to rate

A seasonal bock that returns each winter, in a lovely amber tone with an aromatic hop bitterness. The low carbonation keeps it soft, easy-drinking and full-bodied. The brewery later built its spring bock largely on this recipe. Unfiltered and unpasteurised like every Gablitzer beer, brewed by hand in Purkersdorf, in the Vienna Woods.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Gablitzer Winterbock

◎ Appearance

A warm amber hue catches the light with clarity that reveals the beer's unfiltered character and living yeast in suspension. The head is modest and fine-textured, settling into a delicate lacing along the glass rim. Low carbonation produces a gentle, creeping foam rather than vigorous bubbles, befitting the soft drinking profile.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with restrained but clean malt—toasted grain and a touch of caramel sweetness from the Malz bill. Aromatic hops emerge as a secondary thread, neither sharp nor assertive, adding a measured herbal and slightly woody frame. The unfiltered nature brings a faint bread-like softness from living yeast, without any sulfury or vegetative notes.

◐ Taste

The palate enters soft and full-bodied, with the Malz character providing gentle sweetness and depth rather than cloying richness. Mid-palate is smooth and warming, the 6.4% ABV remaining well-integrated. The aromatic bitterness arrives as a refined, non-aggressive finish to each sip—25 IBU positioned to balance rather than dominate, leaving a dry, slightly mineral aftertaste.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium in length, fading gradually into a dry, grainy echo. The low carbonation ensures a smooth, lingering coat on the palate without any harsh edges.
