Vortex IPA

Tap to rate

Pine needles, citrus, melon and resin on the nose with light malty notes; on the palate upfront bitterness meets a moderate malty sweetness. Vortex IPA is Fort George's flagship at 7.2% ABV, hopped with Simcoe through brewing, fermentation and conditioning over pale malt. The name recalls the tornado that nearly scattered the original pub brew system, Sweet Virginia, across Nebraska on its way from Virginia Beach to Astoria.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with prominent pine and resinous hop character, layered with bright citrus notes and a subtle melon undertone. Pale malt grounds the profile with light, clean grain sweetness, allowing the hop aromatics—derived from Simcoe throughout the brewing cycle—to dominate without becoming harsh.

◐ Taste

Upfront bitterness arrives immediately, backed by a moderately sweet malt body that prevents the beer from becoming one-dimensional. The palate shows the classic West Coast IPA balance: resinous and hoppy mid-palate transitions to a lingering dryness, with citrus and pine notes carrying through to the finish.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and relatively dry, with persistent resinous and piney hop notes fading gradually. Bitterness lingers appropriately without becoming astringent or overly harsh.
