Venijn

Netherlands·Italian Grape Ale
Tap to rate

Venijn is an annual special with the Haagse Stadswijngaard: pulp left over from the vineyard's grape harvest goes into the brew, giving the beer a red colour and a fresh-sour finish. Champagne yeast makes it dry, and a light bitterness completes it. The name comes from the saying that beer after wine gives venom. Each edition is a limited run.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Venijn

◎ Appearance

Venijn presents a clear ruby-red hue, the result of grape pulp integration from the Haagse Stadswijngaard's harvest. The beer holds a fine white head with moderate retention and displays lively carbonation throughout. The clarity suggests good separation of solids despite the fruit adjunct, lending the glass an inviting jewel-like quality.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with bright white wine character and fresh grape must, underscored by subtle stone fruit notes. Champagne yeast contributes a dry, slightly funky complexity without overshadowing the fruit. A whisper of herbal Edelhopfen sits in the background, balancing the vinous impression with restrained bitterness.

◐ Taste

Venijn enters the palate with immediate tartness and a wine-like dryness that dominates the mid-palate. The grape tannins add structure and a light astringency, while subtle malt sweetness offers counterpoint without cloying. Light noble hop bitterness arrives cleanly on the finish, reinforcing the dry profile and adding definition to what could otherwise blur into pure fruitiness.

◑ Finish

The finish is crisp and lingering, with the sour and bitter elements retreating evenly. A persistent dryness and faint grape-skin astringency remain on the palate, inviting the next sip.
