American Barleywine

Tap to rate

A dark copper American Barleywine with a lot of body and a rich range of flavours and aromas: ripe fruit, quince, nuts and vanilla, with herbal shades and the unmistakable bitter finish that American hops bring. It is built on Chevallier barley, a variety that shaped English beer for over 100 years and was revived by Crisp, dry hopped with Cascade, Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe and fermented with Nottingham yeast.

◎ Appearance

Deep copper to dark amber hue, displaying excellent clarity with a fine, persistent head that clings to the glass in delicate lacework. The color suggests a mature, well-crafted barleywine with substantial Maillard development during the boil. Carbonation is moderate and well-integrated, supporting the dense foam structure without aggressive fizz.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with ripe stone fruit—quince and dried apricot—layered over a foundation of toasted nuts and creamy vanilla. American hop varieties (Cascade, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe) assert themselves with herbal and resinous notes that cut through the malt sweetness. Underlying the brightness sits a subtle warmth from the 11% ABV, without harsh alcohol volatility.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and malty, with the Chevallier barley delivering a rich, slightly sweet foundation. Mid-palate layers in dried fruit complexity and gentle spice from the hop blend, while a pronounced, clean bitterness emerges—characteristic of American noble hops—and builds steadily across the palate. The finish remains dry and assertive, with no cloying residue.
