Original 1901

Tap to rate

Chocolatey on the first sip, with fine roasted malt aromas and a restrained hop addition. This dark wheat beer, known as the "Schwarze Weisse" (black Weisse), is the brewery's contribution to the Lenten season and is made to the original recipe of founder Adelbert Behr from 1901. Behr, a German-born brewer, adventurer and big-game hunter, built his brewery in the backyard of his inn in Salzburg-Schallmoos.

◌ Aroma

Beneath lies a subtle weizen character: soft clove and banana from the yeast, neither aggressive nor buried. The hop addition remains restrained, allowing the malt to anchor the aromatic profile.

◐ Taste

Chocolate dominates the entry, moving into a full but not heavy mid-palate where roasted malt and wheat flour notes interweave with gentle toasty undertones. Clove and banana spice emerge softly, adding complexity without overwhelming the core malt sweetness. Bitterness is low and refined, finishing the taste with a whisper rather than assertion.

◑ Finish
