Off Menu IPA

Tap to rate

Camden's first regular IPA, launched in 2019 as a north London reading of the West Coast style. It relies on a single hop variety: early-harvest Simcoe, added at four stages of the brewing process. Light malts and a clean Californian ale yeast leave the stage to the hop; the result is hoppy, clean and tropical. At 5.8% it is the strongest of the standing beers. The name recalls the IPAs the lager-focused brewery used to make on the side without listing them; it is on draught at the beer hall.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Off Menu IPA

◎ Appearance

Light golden-amber hue with excellent transparency and bright clarity. A dense, white head forms with good initial retention, settling to a thin collar with fine Schaumhaftung around the glass. Carbonation appears moderate and well-integrated, lending the beer a lively visual presence.

◌ Aroma

Simcoe dominates the nose across all four additions, delivering layered citrus—prominent grapefruit and tangerine—alongside subtle pine and herbal green notes. Clean Californian yeast contributes a whisper of fruit esters but stays restrained, allowing the hop character to occupy center stage. The light malts provide only a soft, bready undertone that never competes.

◐ Taste

Entry is bright and crisp, with citrus and tropical stone fruit—mango and peach—leading the palate. Mid-palate shows good body for the ABV, with a gentle resinous bitterness (40 IBU) that complements rather than overwhelms. The clean yeast and light malts provide a dry, almost mineral platform, letting Simcoe's complexity unfold without sweetness or heaviness.

◑ Finish

Crisp, lingering finish dominated by citrus pith and subtle pine. The bitterness fades into a clean, dry aftertaste with no residual sweetness or astringency.

The curved shape concentrates hop aromas and supports a thick head. Essential for aromatic ales and IPAs where the nose is half the experience.

Finding a similar West Coast IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same hoppy, tropical, clean character as Off Menu IPA will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
