Brand English Barley Wine

Tap to rate

Full-malt and lightly fruity, this 10% English Barley Wine was brewed for the winter days with barley and wheat malts, English hops and authentic yeast. It can happily be laid down to deepen with age, yet drinks well straight away. It is the first of a planned yearly series of keeping beers from Wijlre.

◎ Appearance

Deep amber to copper-brown, revealing excellent clarity with a luminous sheen when held to light. A dense, cream-colored head forms readily and clings persistently to the glass, building attractive lacing as the beer is consumed. The carbonation appears moderate and well-integrated, supporting the substantial character of this winter ale.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with prominent malt-forward notes—toasted barley, honey, and gentle caramel sweetness from the marriage of barley and wheat malts. Behind this sits restrained but perceptible dark fruit character, reminiscent of raisins and dried plums, with subtle English hop earthiness providing a grounding herbal undertone. The alcohol warmth is present but measured, contributing to the overall inviting bouquet.

◐ Taste

The palate opens full and viscous, with rich malt sweetness dominating—layers of caramel, bread crust, and a distinctive wheat grain character that sits comfortably alongside barley depth. Dark stone fruits and subtle dried fruit notes emerge in the mid-palate, while moderate bitterness from the English hops provides structural balance without overwhelming the malt foundation. The 10% alcohol is warming rather than harsh, melting smoothly into the overall texture.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and gently warming, with malt sweetness persisting into a dry, slightly resinous aftertaste. A faint hoppy grip and the lingering warmth of alcohol encourage contemplation rather than quick consumption.
