Jumbo IPA

Tap to rate

Jumbo is a big IPA brewed with Kirkstall Brewery for its Great Exhibition of Prize Ales, a Leeds festival that asked brewers for new beers with a link to the past. Much of the grist is Chevallier, an English heritage malt common in the Victorian era, giving pronounced sweet malt with honey and marmalade. Contemporary English hops led by Ernest add bitter grapefruit, apricot and spice, and a clean American ale yeast keeps it balanced. It came out in 2025.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with pronounced sweetness from Chevallier malt—honey and marmalade notes provide a honeyed, preservelike foundation. English hops, led by Ernest, layer in fresh grapefruit and stone fruit character, with subtle pepper and spice emerging on closer inspection. The clean ale yeast remains largely neutral, allowing the interplay between heritage malt and contemporary hops to take center stage.

◐ Taste

Entry is smooth and slightly sweet, with the Chevallier malt delivering a rich honeyed malt character across the palate. The mid-palate develops bitterness from Ernest hops—grapefruit rind and dried apricot flavors integrate cleanly with subtle herbal spice. At 60 IBU, the bitterness is assertive but balanced against the malt's residual sweetness, creating a satisfying tension without harshness.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium in length with a dry, slightly bitter aftertaste dominated by grapefruit pith and a whisper of marmalade. The clean yeast character and restrained 6.6% ABV allow the finish to remain crisp rather than warming or cloying.

Serve well-chilled. Session IPAs are at their best cold — the lower ABV means less warmth to balance the hops.

Tulip glass

The curved shape concentrates hop aromas and supports a thick head. Essential for aromatic ales and IPAs where the nose is half the experience.

Drink fresh. Session IPAs are brewed to be consumed young — the hops are at their best now.

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same malty, honey, hoppy character as Jumbo IPA will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
