Danelaw

Tap to rate

Danelaw is a brown ale Anspach & Hobday brewed with Væskebalancen Bar & Bottleshop in Denmark, its name a nod to the time when Viking-ruled parts of England were known as the Danelaw. It showcases Chevallier, an English heritage malt, alongside Extra Pale, Caragold, brown malt, Special B and Carafa III, hopped with Admiral, Bramling Cross and East Kent Goldings and fermented with an American ale yeast. Malty and slightly sweet, it launched in October 2024.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with warming notes of toasted brown malt and light caramel sweetness, underpinned by the earthy, herbal character of Bramling Cross and East Kent Goldings. Subtle spice and a whisper of dark fruit emerge beneath, while the American ale yeast contributes a clean fermentation profile without fruity esters. The overall impression is restrained and malt-forward, with hop character serving as a supporting rather than dominant voice.

◐ Taste

Entry is soft and slightly sweet, with Chevallier and Caragold malts providing a foundation of biscuit and gentle toffee. The mid-palate develops deeper roasted grain complexity from the brown malt and Carafa III, adding slight cocoa undertones without harsh astringency. The 24 IBU bitterness is restrained and finishes clean, allowing the malt's natural sweetness to persist without becoming cloying.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium in length, trailing into a gentle drying sensation as the hops' earthy resinousness gradually fades. Residual malt sweetness lingers pleasantly on the palate, inviting another sip.
