The Best French Amber Ales

French craft amber follows the American Amber Ale template with essentially no native tradition running in parallel. Eight of the 10 French ambers on this ranking are American Amber Ale in style; the remaining 2 are a Scottish Ale interpretation and a Dark Ale (Brasserie Lancelot's Telenn Du, a Breton dark that appears across multiple family classifications). France has no equivalent of Germany's Altbier, Britain's Scottish Ale, or Belgium's amber styles — French brewing historically flowed toward the bière de garde and other Farmhouse-family traditions, not toward a native Amber category. When French craft brewers produce Amber, they adopt the American template.

Ninkasi (Lyon), Bières Michard, La Parisienne, Brasserie de la Goutte d'Or (Paris craft), and Le Grizzly round out the ranking. French amber is small; the Breton and Corsican regional producers give it more distinctive character than the sub-style label alone would suggest.
