The Veil Brewing Co. was founded by Matt Tarpey and opened in Richmond, Virginia, in 2016 in the Scott's Addition neighborhood. Tarpey named the brewery after a conversation with Jean Van Roy of Brasserie Cantillon in Belgium in January 2014, who described the protective pellicle inside a beer barrel as 'the veil.' Before founding The Veil, Tarpey worked at Portsmouth Brewery, The Alchemist, Brasserie Cantillon, and Hill Farmstead. The Veil quickly earned a reputation as one of the most exciting breweries on the East Coast, specializing in hop-forward IPAs, fruited sour ales, wild and spontaneous fermentation beers, and spirit-barrel-aged stouts and barleywines.
