Smuttynose Brewing Company was founded in 1994 by Peter Egelston and his sister Janet in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and is named after Smuttynose Island off the New Hampshire coast. After financial difficulties, the brewery was sold at a foreclosure auction in March 2018, purchased by Runnymede Investments, and subsequently operated under the entity Finestkind Brewing. In December 2024, Finestkind merged with Mass. Bay Brewing Company to form Barrel One Collective, making Smuttynose part of the largest craft brewing group in New England. Production at the Hampton, NH facility was paused as operations consolidated, though hospitality at the Hampton campus continues.
