Croatia's first modern craft brewery and a pioneer of Croatian microbrewing — Pivovara Medvedgrad was founded in 1994 in Zagreb, named after the medieval castle Medvedgrad that overlooks the city from Mount Medvednica. One of the few Croatian breweries established as a genuine brewpub, Medvedgrad has operated continuously for over 30 years and is widely credited with sparking Croatian interest in craft beer styles beyond pale lager.
