Licher traces back to 1854, when Johann Heinrich Jhring founded a steam brewery in the Upper Hessian town of Lich to supply his parents' inn. In 1858 Christoph Jakob Melchior began brewing in nearby Butzbach, and the two family businesses merged in 1923 as Jhring-Melchior. After 1945 the brewery worked for the American occupation forces before returning to the regional market; Licher has been the leading beer brand in Hesse since 1988. It has belonged to the Bitburger Braugruppe since 2004 and exports to more than 40 countries.
