Founded in 1854 in Lich, Hesse, when the innkeeper's son Johann Heinrich Jhring set up a steam brewery to supply his parents' tavern. In 1923 it merged with the Gambrinus brewery run by Christoph Jakob Melchior in nearby Butzbach, which gave the company its double name. After 1945 it produced exclusively for the American occupation forces until regular distribution resumed in 1950. Holsten took a stake in 1999; since 2004 the brewery has belonged to the Bitburger Braugruppe.
