Karl Strauss Brewing Company opened on February 2, 1989, making it the first new brewery in San Diego in more than fifty years and the city's first-ever brewpub. The company was founded by Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner, who enlisted legendary German-American brewmaster Karl Strauss to design the brewery, train the brewers, and formulate the original recipes. Karl Strauss is widely credited with launching the craft brewing industry in San Diego and remains the oldest surviving brewery in San Diego County. The company has expanded to nine locations across Southern California and continues to operate its flagship Downtown San Diego brewpub.
