Hook Norton Brewery was founded in 1849 by farmer and maltster John Harris in the village of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire. Commercial brewing began in 1856, with the first recorded brew being a Mild XXX on 24 November 1856. The current Victorian tower brewery was constructed during an expansion in the late nineteenth century and is still powered in part by a steam engine dating from 1899. The brewery has remained under family control for six generations and is one of a small number of UK breweries still using a steam engine in production.
