Commercial brewing began in 1856, with the first recorded brew being a Mild XXX on 24 November 1856. The current Victorian tower brewery was constructed during an expansion in the late nineteenth century and is still powered in part by a steam engine dating from 1899. The brewery has remained under family control for six generations and is one of a small number of UK breweries still using a steam engine in production.
