Carlsberg was founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen on Valby Hill outside Copenhagen and named after his son Carl. In 1875 Jacobsen set up the Carlsberg Laboratory, where Emil Christian Hansen isolated a pure lager yeast in 1883 and made the method available to other brewers. The company headquarters remain in Valby, while the Danish beers are now brewed in Fredericia. Carlsberg Danmark is part of the Carlsberg Group, whose majority owner is the Carlsberg Foundation.
