Haynau's Retreat

Tap to rate

Black treacle runs through Haynau's Retreat, a 5.3% dark lager brewed with The Kernel. It is a modern take on a 1930 London black lager, made near where The Kernel stands today with an odd process: the sweetest mash runnings were boiled down into a rich syrup and added back before fermentation. Pronounced 'High-now's', and vegan friendly.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Haynau's Retreat

◎ Appearance

Deep black with ruby highlights at the rim, this lager presents excellent clarity despite its dark colour. A dense, tan head settles to a fine ring with good retention and distinct lacing down the glass. Fine carbonation provides a polished, refined presentation.

◌ Aroma

Black treacle and roasted grain dominate the nose, layered with notes of dark fruit—plum and raisin—and subtle coffee undertones. The treacle-enriched mash process rounds the typically sharp roast character into something softer and more inviting. A touch of clean lager character keeps the aroma balanced and approachable.

◐ Taste

The palate enters sweet and rich, with black treacle and dark malt building a full, satisfying body. Mid-palate balances this sweetness with roasted grain texture and subtle coffee bitterness, while dark fruit complexity adds depth. Restrained noble hop bitterness (25 IBU) provides structure without asserting itself, allowing malt and adjunct character to lead.

◑ Finish

The finish remains smooth and clean, with treacle sweetness fading gradually into a gentle roast dryness. A light, lingering coffee note persists without roughness, leaving the palate satisfied rather than fatigued.
