Karlsberg UrPils

Tap to rate

UrPils is the bitter one among Karlsberg's two pilsners and the core beer of the Homburg brewery. The taste is firmly bitter and fresh, carried by a pronounced hop character rather than by malt. It is brewed with soft Homburg water and barley malt to an original gravity of 11.5 °P and 35 bitterness units, clearly above the house's milder Pilsener. The beer was brought to market under Paul Weber, who led the brewery after the Second World War.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with a pronounced noble hop character—herbal and slightly spicy notes with a touch of floral dryness. Below this sits a clean, understated malt base of soft grain and a whisper of bread crust, while the fermentation remains discreet and neutral, allowing the Edelhopfen to dominate.

◐ Taste

The palate opens dry and crisp, with a bracing bitterness that arrives cleanly on entry and builds steadily through the mid-palate. The malt provides a light, slightly sweet foundation of pale grain and bread, but the 35 IBUs assert themselves as the dominant force, finishing with a characteristic noble hop bite that lingers without becoming harsh.

◑ Finish

The finish is dry and moderately long, with the hop bitterness persisting as a pleasant astringency. A faint mineral note from the soft Homburg water provides subtle length without sweetness or heaviness.

Serve at 4–7°C

Serve well-chilled at 4–6°C for maximum crispness. A pilsner served too warm loses its defining snap.

Pilsner glass

The tall, narrow pilsner glass preserves carbonation and showcases the golden clarity that defines the style.

Drink fresh and cold. Pilsners do not improve with age — within 3 months of packaging is ideal.

What is a German Pilsner?

Pilsners are crisp golden lagers with 4–5.5% ABV and IBU 25–45. Defined by spicy, floral Saaz hops over a light malt backbone — bright carbonation and a dry bitter finish.

Finding a similar German Pilsner

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same bitter, hoppy, crisp character as Karlsberg UrPils will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
