Witte Winter

Tap to rate

A heavily cloudy witbier, soft and creamy, with light caramel notes and a spicy surprise of clove, orange and coriander seed. Azacca, Exp 035 and Summer hops sit over barley, oats and wheat. The name comes from the yearly winter dream of snow and northern lights; Jopen released it as a winter special at 7.5% ABV.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Witte Winter

◎ Appearance

A pale straw color with pronounced haze from suspended yeast and wheat proteins, creating a soft, diffuse appearance. The dense, creamy head builds quickly and clings persistently to the glass, leaving fine lacing on each sip. Gentle carbonation produces small, tightly clustered bubbles that rise deliberately through the cloudy matrix.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with bright citrus—ripe orange peel and a hint of bergamot—layered over warming spice from clove and coriander seed. Beneath the botanical top notes lies a soft, grainy sweetness from oats and wheat, with subtle suggestions of light caramel. The hop aromatics remain restrained, offering only gentle herbal undertones that do not overpower the traditional witbier character.

◐ Taste

The palate enters soft and creamy, coating the mouth with the mouthfeel of wheat and oats before developing into a wave of warm spice—clove and coriander dominate the mid-palate with gentle intensity. Light caramel and orange notes provide sweetness and brightness, while a subtle boozy warmth (7.5% ABV) emerges in the center. Bitterness remains low at 15 IBU, allowing the spice and citrus to lead; the finish stays refreshing rather than astringent.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium-length and gently warming, with the spice lingering pleasantly into the aftertaste. A dry, slightly peppery note from the coriander seed persists, balanced by residual citrus sweetness that keeps the beer from becoming too assertive.

Serve at 5–8°C

Serve cold to preserve the delicate citrus and spice aromas. Too warm and the yeast esters become heavy — too cold and the coriander disappears.

Witbier glass

The tall, slender wheat beer glass holds the full 50cl pour and shows off the hazy golden colour. The wide mouth lets citrus and spice aromas drift upward freely.

Best consumed fresh. Citrus and spice notes fade after 3–4 months. Drink within 6 months of packaging.
