Extra Stout

Netherlands·Dry Stout
Tap to rate

The Dutch dry stout: the last breweries active in Haarlem in the early 1900s all brewed an Extra Stout, and this one first launched as Jubeljoop II. Roasted barley brings dark chocolate and coffee to the nose, then a medium body with roasted coffee, cocoa and licorice and a dry roastiness like after an espresso. East Kent Golding, 5.5% ABV.

Deep opaque black with a mahogany rim when held to light. A dense tan head forms on the pour and clings to the glass with persistent lacing as the beer recedes. The body is full and substantial, with moderate carbonation evident in a steady stream of fine bubbles.

◌ Aroma

Roasted barley dominates the nose, opening with dark chocolate and espresso notes. Beneath lies a subtle coffee earthiness with hints of cocoa powder and a faint licorice undertone. The East Kent Golding hops contribute a restrained herbal dryness that does not overpower the roasted character.
