Halbstarker

🌍 Germany · Leichtbier · One of 2 Leichtbiers in hopIQ

Halbstarker is the brewery's light beer at 2.5 percent, brewed as a special batch for the beer-garden season and poured at the inn and at the Griess-Keller. Like the rest of the range it is decoction-mashed, bottom-fermented and left unfiltered, and the brewery works with Pilsner malt and Hallertau hops. It pours a hazy pale gold. Grain and fresh bread crust come through on the nose and first sip, followed by a gentle, herbal hop bitterness. The body is lean, and the finish is clean and dry, with more flavour than the low strength would suggest.

The overall profile is clean and inviting, with no yeast esters or off-notes—an expression of straightforward brewing clarity.

Taste

The palate enters with soft bready maltiness before a lean, dry body takes hold. Herbal hop bitterness emerges in the mid-palate with understated elegance, never harsh despite the beer's low strength. The interplay between malt sweetness and noble hop bite reveals more complexity than the 2.5% ABV would initially suggest.

Finish

The finish is clean and dry, with a lingering herbal-hop dryness that extends beyond what the alcohol level might promise. The aftertaste returns briefly to grain and bread, then fades into a refreshing mineral dryness.
