Old Backus Barleywine

Tap to rate

A barleywine built from huge amounts of hops and malt, conditioned for a long time before it is released, with Columbus and Crystal hops in the hop bill. The name honors a friend of the brewery, Richie Backus, and is not to be mistaken for Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. Brewed in Lawrence, Kansas, by Free State, the first legal brewery in the state in over 100 years.

AI-generated sensory profile for Old Backus Barleywine

◎ Appearance

Deep amber to light copper in color, with excellent clarity revealing its well-developed character. A dense, tan head forms readily and clings persistently to the glass walls, demonstrating strong malt-derived proteins and proper conditioning. Carbonation appears moderate and well-integrated.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with assertive pine and resinous hop character from Columbus, layered beneath a substantial Malz foundation of caramel and toasted grain. Beneath these primary elements sit notes of dried dark fruit—raisin and fig—along with subtle alcohol warmth that speaks to its 10% ABV. The extended conditioning has allowed these elements to marry into a complex, cohesive whole.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with robust malt sweetness tempered immediately by substantial, lingering bitterness that builds through the mid-palate. Crystal hops contribute both floral and resinous qualities alongside the assertive 100 IBU foundation. The full body carries rich caramel notes and a warming alcohol presence, while the finish remains dry and hoppy, never cloying despite the beer's considerable gravity.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and dry, with lingering bitterness and pine resin that persists for several minutes. A pleasant warmth settles in the throat, the hallmark of a well-crafted, high-gravity barleywine.
