Lycosa

Tap to rate

Aroma of fudge, graham cracker, dark fruit and barrel char; flavours of dark chocolate, maple, vanilla and rich caramel, richly sweet and barely bitter. Lycosa is a 12.85% ABV imperial stout aged for 18 months in IJW whiskey barrels, brewed with Cascade hops, honey and brown sugar. It is named for the wolf spider, Lycosa in Latin, and the brewers say it has a bigger bite.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Lycosa

◎ Appearance

Deep black-brown color with a dense, tan head that clings to the glass with strong lacing. The beer is opaque and viscous, moving slowly in the glass with the weight of its 12.85% ABV. Carbonation is restrained, allowing the full body to settle prominently.

◌ Aroma

Fudge and graham cracker provide sweetness, while dark dried fruit and a whisper of honey round out the complex aromatic profile. The Cascade hops remain subtle, adding only a gentle herbal undertone.

◐ Taste

Entry is richly sweet with prominent maple and caramel, transitioning through layers of dark chocolate and smooth vanilla across the mid-palate. The 65 IBUs provide restraint rather than aggression—bitterness emerges only as a structural counterpoint to the caramel sweetness. Whiskey barrel influence delivers oak tannins and a slight warmth that complements the honey and brown sugar backbone without overwhelming the palate.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and warming, with chocolate and caramel fading slowly into a dry oak impression. Residual sweetness and alcohol warmth linger pleasantly, inviting another contemplative sip.
