O'Hara's Double Barrel Aged Leann Folláin

Tap to rate

The tenth edition of the barrel-aged series and the first to pass through two kinds of wood: six months in Irish whiskey casks that formerly held bourbon, which add vanilla and caramel, then six months in ex-oloroso sherry casks from a solera in Jerez, which bring a warming sweetness of stewed fruit. After blending, the stout was bottle-conditioned for 90 days. Opaque black, smooth and lightly carbonated at 12.0 %, with several layers of flavour.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for O'Hara's Double Barrel Aged Leann Folláin

◎ Appearance

Opaque black with no visible light transmission, presenting a dense and impenetrable surface. A modest tan head forms and recedes, leaving delicate Schaumkleiden along the glass walls. The lightly carbonated character is evident in the slow, deliberate rise of bubbles through the viscous body.

◌ Aroma

The nose reveals layered wood and fermentation complexity. Whiskey-cask influence brings vanilla and caramel sweetness, while the sherry aging contributes darker dried-fruit notes—raisin and prune—with a subtle warming spice underneath. A soft roasted malt foundation supports these adjunct layers without asserting dominance.

◐ Taste

Entry is smooth and full-bodied, with no sharp edges despite the 12% ABV and 65 IBU. Mid-palate develops rich caramel and toffee from the bourbon cask, balanced by oloroso's honeyed stone-fruit warmth. The bitterness arrives late and measured, providing structure without astringency, while a faint cocoa-like dryness lingers at the edges.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and warming, with the alcohol's heat gradually emerging as the beer warms in the glass. Aftertaste settles into dried-fruit sweetness and oak tannin, fading slowly over several minutes.
