Altenauer Edelpils

Tap to rate

A golden Pils from Altenau in the Upper Harz, hopped boldly and brewed to 4.9% ABV. It comes from what the brewery calls Northern Germany's highest-lying private brewery, where Harz mountain water and barley from the Oker valley meet in a brewhouse with directly fired kettles. Closure was announced in January 2021, and a public campaign helped turn it around.

◐ Taste

The palate opens crisp and refreshing, with a well-integrated bitterness that sits squarely in the mid-range — neither aggressive nor soft. The body remains lean and clean, allowing the interplay of hop bitterness and mineral dryness to emerge clearly through the mid-palate, finishing dry without astringency.

◑ Finish

The finish is medium in length, fading to a pleasant, lingering mineral dryness. A subtle hoppy aftertaste persists without becoming harsh.

Serve at 4–7°C

Serve well-chilled at 4–6°C for maximum crispness. A pilsner served too warm loses its defining snap.

Pilsner glass

The tall, narrow pilsner glass preserves carbonation and showcases the golden clarity that defines the style.

Drink fresh and cold. Pilsners do not improve with age — within 3 months of packaging is ideal.

Pilsners are crisp golden lagers with 4–5.5% ABV and IBU 25–45. Defined by spicy, floral Saaz hops over a light malt backbone — bright carbonation and a dry bitter finish.
