It brews in Altenau, a district of Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Upper Harz, with Harz mountain water, barley from the Oker valley and directly fired kettles. Brewing in the town goes back to 1617, when local miners and smelter workers were allowed to make their own beer. Closure was announced in January 2021; after a rescue campaign the brewery has been privately run since 1 April 2021.
