Tuborg was founded on 13 May 1873 as Tuborgs Fabrikker at the harbour in Hellerup, north of Copenhagen, by a group of businessmen around Philip W. Heyman and C. F. Tietgen. The first beer went on sale in 1875, and in 1880 the brewery launched Grøn Tuborg, the first pilsner-type beer in Denmark. Tuborg merged with Carlsberg in 1970; the last beer was brewed in Hellerup in 1996, and production has since been concentrated in Fredericia. Year-round lagers stand alongside Easter and Christmas brews that mark the Danish calendar.
