Toppling Goliath Brewing Company
Founded in 2009 by Clark and Barbara Lewey in Decorah, Iowa — a town of under 8,000 people — after years of award-winning homebrewing. Clark spent 24 years as a merchandising equipment supplier for beverage companies before pivoting to beer. In less than a decade, Toppling Goliath became world-renowned, earning the #2 brewery ranking from BeerAdvocate and the title of 2021 and 2023 US Beer Open Grand National Champions. Their barrel-aged stout Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout (KBBS) has held the #1 beer in the world title on multiple platforms since 2015.

They stay close to the peer baseline on their recurring notes.
How we measure this
Two thresholds are at work here:
- The signature list shows notes that recur in at least 6% of this brewery's beers. A low bar — enough to flag a pattern, not high enough to call it an exclusive trait.
- The peer comparison below shows only notes where this brewery's coverage differs from similar breweries by at least 20 percentage points. A higher bar — enough to call a real difference, not a nudge.
A note can appear on the signature list without appearing in the peer comparison: it recurs here, but similar breweries do the same thing.
Pseudo Sue
Their beers place in the Top 62% of the catalogue on average, across 43 ranked beers. One clear standout well ahead of the rest.
