Known for a full range of styles

Robert Theakston began brewing in the cellar of the Black Bull Inn in Masham in 1827, and his descendants still run the family brewery in the Yorkshire Dales market town. Brothers Thomas and Robert finished the Victorian tower brewery in 1875; Theakston took over Masham's only other brewery, Lightfoot, in 1919 and bought itself back into family control from Scottish & Newcastle in 2003. According to Companies House, Heineken UK Limited holds between 25 and 50 percent of the company. Old Peculier is the best-known beer.

How we measure this

Two thresholds are at work here:

  • The signature list shows notes that recur in at least 6% of this brewery's beers. A low bar — enough to flag a pattern, not high enough to call it an exclusive trait.
  • The peer comparison below shows only notes where this brewery's coverage differs from similar breweries by at least 20 percentage points. A higher bar — enough to call a real difference, not a nudge.

A note can appear on the signature list without appearing in the peer comparison: it recurs here, but similar breweries do the same thing.
