Johann Joachim Schlegel, a brewmaster from Franconia, opened his brewery in Bochum in 1854 and brewed lager in the Bavarian manner; after the merger with Scharpenseel in 1918 the company grew into one of the larger breweries in Germany. Dortmunder Union took it over in 1971 and ended production in 1980. In 2002 two Bochum entrepreneurs bought the brand rights and brought back the Urtyp export, brewed under contract at partner breweries in the region.
