Privatbrauerei Hoepfner traces its origins to 1798, when the Hoepfner family began an inn and brewing operation in Liedolsheim. In 1850, Jakob Friedrich Hoepfner relocated to Karlsruhe, taking over a brewery on what is now Kaiserstraße. Under Friedrich Hoepfner from 1872, the business expanded rapidly into an industrial-scale enterprise. Between 1896 and 1899 an iconic new brewery was built at Haid-und-Neu-Straße 18, the 'Hoepfner Burg', a striking sandstone building blending medieval castle, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau architecture that remains the brewery's home today.
