Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Company was established in 1999 as Coastal Extreme Brewing Company by four Colby College graduates — Brent Ryan, Derek Luke, Mark Sinclair, and Will Rafferty — and was the first microbrewery in Newport, Rhode Island. The company added distilling operations in 2006, launching Newport Distilling Company and producing Thomas Tew Rum, named after Rhode Island's first pirate and the only rum currently produced in the state. In 2018, the company adopted its current name to reflect the combined brewing and distilling identity. A major multi-year expansion project completed in 2024 added a new production facility, taproom, outdoor bar, and event spaces.
