Known for Alcohol-Free Pilsner

Maes began in 1880, when Egied Maes revived the small Sint-Michaël brewery in Waarloos. Two decades later his sons Ferdinand and Theophiel took over and fitted it with a steam engine; in 1930 the Prima Maezenbier was presented at the Antwerp World Exhibition. The new Maes poured for the first time on 20 April 2009, and the range now spans the classic pils, an alcohol-free 0.0 and lemon and rosé versions.

Only what these two beers agree on — a full signature needs at least three.

Two beers isn't enough to tell how they differ from comparable breweries.

How we measure this

Two thresholds are at work here:

  • The signature list shows notes that recur in at least 6% of this brewery's beers. A low bar — enough to flag a pattern, not high enough to call it an exclusive trait.
  • The peer comparison below shows only notes where this brewery's coverage differs from similar breweries by at least 20 percentage points. A higher bar — enough to call a real difference, not a nudge.

A note can appear on the signature list without appearing in the peer comparison: it recurs here, but similar breweries do the same thing.
