Holsten was founded as a joint-stock brewery in 1879 in Altona, then a Holstein town on the edge of Hamburg; the first brew followed in 1880, and a knight on horseback has served as its emblem from the start. Holsten Edel joined the range in 1913 and became one of the best-known beers of northern Germany. The brewery has belonged to the Carlsberg Group since 2004. In 2019 production moved from the historic Altona site, now being turned into a residential quarter, to a new brewery in Hamburg-Hausbruch.
