Equilibrium Brewery was founded in Middletown, New York, by Peter Oates and Ricardo Petroni, two MIT-trained environmental engineers who had worked together on water remediation. The decision to start the business dates back to 2009; recipe development in Oates's house began in 2013, and in 2016 it opened and started distributing from a renovated century-old meatpacking building. It now operates on South Street with a taproom, beer garden and barbecue kitchen. The range centres on hazy pale ales and double IPAs, alongside a pilsner, a porter and a farmhouse ale.
