Cervecería Austral was founded in 1896 in Punta Arenas by the German brewmaster José Fischer, originally under the name Cervecería La Patagona. The brewery still stands on its original site on Calle Patagona; the growing city has since wrapped around it, and the plant now offers tours. Since 2000 the company has been owned in equal parts by the Chilean group CCU and the maltster Maltexco. Its range combines a classic lager with beers named after the landscapes and peoples of Magallanes, including an ale brewed with the native calafate berry.
