Brasserie d'Orval is the Trappist brewery inside the walls of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Orval in Villers-devant-Orval, part of Florenville in the Gaume region of southern Belgium. The monks founded it in 1931 to pay for rebuilding the abbey and hired lay staff from the start; the first brewmaster, Pappenheimer, wrote the recipe. Water comes from the Mathilde spring on the site, and a new brewhouse opened in 2007. Around 22 million bottles leave the brewery each year, more than 85 % of them sold in Belgium, and part of the income goes to social causes.
