Heart & Soul

Tap to rate

One of the first beers Vocation brewed in 2015 and still a fixture of the core range. It aims for the hop character of an IPA at session strength: full-bodied for 4.4%, with a fruit-salad profile of passion fruit, grapefruit, gooseberry, pineapple and mango. The brewery sells it as gluten free, and it is also poured on cask in its own bars.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with vibrant tropical fruit notes—passion fruit and mango dominate, supported by grapefruit zest and a subtle gooseberry undertone. Clean noble hop character sits at the fore without any harsh green or vegetal edges. A light, bready malt foundation provides balance, allowing the fruit-forward hop profile to shine without dominating.

◐ Taste

Entry is juicy and full-bodied for its strength, with immediate passion fruit and tropical stone fruit character. The mid-palate sustains this fruit-salad character—pineapple and gooseberry emerge alongside gentle grapefruit bitterness—while the malt provides a rounded, slightly sweet base. Bitterness builds steadily but never dominates, finishing with a dry, citrus-forward edge that feels refreshing rather than harsh.

◑ Finish

The finish is moderately long, with citrus and hop bitterness lingering pleasantly on the palate. A subtle fruity sweetness fades slowly, leaving a clean, refreshing dryness that invites the next sip.

Serve well-chilled. Session IPAs are at their best cold — the lower ABV means less warmth to balance the hops.

Tulip glass

The curved shape concentrates hop aromas and supports a thick head. Essential for aromatic ales and IPAs where the nose is half the experience.

Drink fresh. Session IPAs are brewed to be consumed young — the hops are at their best now.

About Session IPA

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a Session IPA?

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar Session IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same fruity, hoppy, full-bodied character as Heart & Soul will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
