Old Empire

Tap to rate

Old Empire is Marston's recreation of the India pale ale that made Burton known abroad, clearly stronger than Pedigree. English Goldings and Fuggles meet American Cascade, giving what the brewery calls a crisp, citrus hop aroma and a balanced, bittersweet finish. A Nordic state retailer's tasting note adds an amber-gold colour, medium body, pronounced hop bitterness, ripe apricot, grapefruit and a spicy, malty base. The cask version was withdrawn at the end of 2024.

◐ Taste

Entry is clean and crisp, with pronounced hop bitterness (35 IBU) that sits squarely in the palate without overwhelming. Mid-palate reveals a bittersweet tension between hoppy citrus and a warm, slightly spicy malty foundation; orange and grapefruit notes linger across the tongue. The medium body carries the flavors without feeling thin or overly robust.

About English IPA

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a English IPA?

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar English IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same citrusy, crisp, hoppy character as Old Empire will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
