Black Metal

Tap to rate

Roasty and dense, with hints of chocolate on the finish, Black Metal is Jester King's farmhouse imperial stout. The brewery calls it dry, cruel and punishing, fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. The beer has gone by other names too: Iron Sword, Blackened Death and El Martillo del Muerte, and new batches have arrived under the same name since 2011.

◐ Taste

Entry is full-bodied and dry, with bitter roast immediately establishing presence across the palate. Mid-palate reveals layered chocolate and a slight coffee dryness that prevents sweetness from dominating. Bitterness lingers moderately at 65 IBU, dry rather than sharp, supporting the beer's declared punishing character without astringency.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and drying, with roasted and chocolate notes fading slowly into a clean, bitter aftertaste. The 12% alcohol warms the throat subtly without harshness, leaving the palate thirsty and the impression austere.
