Old Prickly

Tap to rate

Old Prickly began in 2012 as a charity brew for a hedgehog preservation society based near the brewery and stayed on as a permanent beer. The pale, straw-coloured ale uses Maris Otter and Caramalt with Columbus and Lubelski hops. Honey and floral aromas with subtle citrus lead into a smooth, gently sweet palate; bitterness is light and the finish crisp. In bottle it is conditioned on its yeast.

AI-generated sensory profile for Old Prickly

◎ Appearance

Old Prickly presents a pale straw colour with bright clarity and gentle carbonation. The head forms with moderate density and leaves fine lacing down the glass as it subsides. The yeast conditioning in bottle creates a slight haze characteristic of naturally refermented ales.

◐ Taste

The palate enters smooth and gently sweet, with the Caramalt providing a soft caramel backdrop that never becomes cloying. Citrus notes emerge mid-palate alongside restrained bitterness from the Columbus hops, creating balance rather than dominance. The 35 IBUs remain light and refined, allowing the malt character to shine through.

◑ Finish

The finish is crisp and clean, with the carbonation providing a refreshing drying sensation on the palate. Subtle citrus notes linger briefly before fading into a dry aftertaste.

Serve at 7–10°C

Cold enough to sharpen the hop aroma without numbing the palate. Around 7–9°C keeps the citrus and pine vivid without losing bitterness definition.

Pint glass

The classic — versatile, comfortable to hold and keeps the beer cool. No frills, no distractions: just the beer.

Drink fresh — hop aroma fades fast. Best within 3 months of canning or bottling.
