Voodoo Child

Tap to rate

An imperial coffee stout with a coffee-forward character, brewed with ancho chile, Vietnamese cinnamon and cacao. Chocolate and a warm cinnamon spice come through in the glass. It comes from Free State in Lawrence, Kansas, the brewery that opened in 1989 as the first legal brewery in the state in over 100 years, and it is one of the dark, strong beers of the house.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Voodoo Child

◎ Appearance

Opaque black-brown liquid with minimal light transmission, characteristic of the style's high roast level and SRM of 40. A dense, tan-brown head forms and dissipates moderately, leaving intermittent lacing on the glass. The carbonation is restrained, appropriate for an imperial stout of this weight and alcohol content.

◌ Aroma

A pronounced coffee character dominates the nose, supported by deep roasted malt and dark chocolate undertones. Vietnamese cinnamon adds a warm spice layer without overwhelming the primary coffee and cocoa notes. Ancho chile presents subtly beneath, contributing a gentle smoky pepper character that emerges on extended nosing.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with rich, full-bodied coffee and dark chocolate, following directly from the nose. Mid-palate reveals the cinnamon and ancho chile more fully, with a gentle heat that warms rather than burns. Bitterness remains restrained at 18 IBU, allowing the roasted malt sweetness and spice complexity to dominate, while the 9.8% ABV manifests as a subtle boozy warmth without harshness.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and lingering, with cinnamon spice and cocoa notes persisting on the palate for several minutes. A subtle alcohol heat supports the aftertaste without becoming overbearing, while roasted malt character fades gradually into dark chocolate and a faint ancho pepper echo.
